Inventory of commonly used ceramic crucibles in laboratories

Keywords: commonly used ceramic crucibles, alumina crucibles, zirconia crucibles, boron nitride crucibles.

As an important part of laboratory chemical instruments, the crucible is a container for melting and refining metal liquids and solid-liquid heating and reaction, which is the basis for ensuring the smooth progress of chemical reactions.

The ceramic crucible is an important part of the crucible. Today we will take a look at the ceramic crucibles commonly used in the laboratory, which are alumina crucibles, boron nitride crucibles and zirconia crucibles, which are used in different occasions according to their properties.

1. Alumina crucibles (also known as corundum crucibles)

People usually refer to crucibles with alumina content above 95% as corundum crucibles. The corundum crucible is firm and refractory, resistant to high temperature, acid and alkali, quench and extreme heat, and chemical corrosion. It is suitable for the use of anhydrous Na2CO3 and other weakly alkaline substances as flux melting samples, but not for Na2O2 and NaOH types of strongly basic substances and acidic substances as flux melting samples.

99.70% corundum crucible has good high temperature insulation and mechanical strength in the oxidizing and reducing atmosphere of 1650 °C -1700 °C. Its short-term use temperature can reach 1800 °C.

2. Zirconia crucibles

The melting point of zirconia is higher than that of zirconium, up to 2700 °C, it is one of the materials with the best refractory properties in nature, even if it is heated to 1900 °C, it will not interact with molten aluminum, iron, nickel, platinum, silicate, acid slag and etc. So crucibles made of zirconia materials can successfully smelt platinum group precious metals and alloys such as platinum, palladium, ruthenium, and cesium.

It is worth noting that although zirconia is more expensive than alumina, it is a special oxide refractory that cannot be replaced by other oxide materials in high-temperature furnaces above 2000 °C.

3. Boron nitride crucibles

Common types of boron nitride are cubic boron nitride (C-BN) and hexagonal boron nitride (P-BN). Among them, the boron nitride crucible is usually composed of P-BN. P-BN ceramic has good heat resistance, thermal stability, thermal conductivity, high temperature dielectric strength, is an ideal heat dissipation material and high temperature insulating material.

Due to its excellent chemical stability, P-BN can resist the erosion of most molten metals. Therefore, P-BN crucibles are often used to smelt metals and semiconductors. Its use temperature under vacuum is up to 1800 degrees, and the highest temperature under atmospheric protection Up to 2100 ℃, generally protected by nitrogen or argon (atmosphere protection is not to oxidize the crucible).
